6 Great apartment plants

Life before plants was unknowingly dull, and lacking all that awesomeness that photosynthesis adds to ones quality of life! Then it happened, I fell in love with my first plant (Fiddle Leaf Fig) and it all went uphill from there! For a while, I was adding a little greenling here, and a little there every couple of days. If you asked my husband, he would say that I had a hard time finding that thin line between a trendy earthy living room and Tarzan's jungle pad, but it all worked out in the end...I think. Disclaimer: My daughter names all our plants, so you will get both the scientific and the government name.

F I D D L E L E A F F I G T R E E - I REFER TO MINE AS, "BIG SHEILA"

I already stated that this one is my favorite. Thin trunk with the biggest leafs just had me at hello. At first she was a bit temperamental, but after trial and error, we have settled nicely into a good groove. If you notice, she has some battle scars (Brown spots) on the edges of her leaves. That is simply a used error - Watering her with tap water rather than rain or distilled water. She is basically a bottled water snob. You know at least one person that just can't deal with tap water...well this is that girl. You don't have to buy her Dasani (Distilled .97 cents/gallon) you can just collect rainwater for no charge. Rainwater will be the best, because there are all kinds of yummies that come from the ground that she will just love!

Things that she needs: Spot with indirect sunlight - Not too much sun, but just enough. A drink once a week - leaves will droop when she is thirsty and rise when she is quenched. Also another indicator for watering is if the soil feels dry an inch down. Rotation twice a month so that all her leaves get proper UV attention.

She is a creature of habit, so don't move her from her environment too much. She likes her spot once she gets used to it!

Y U C C A - KNOWN IN OUR HOME AS BIG POKEY

She adds so much texture to my space and really evens out Big Sheila's Awkward bird legs. This is a good hearty plant that needs minimal attention - A sunny spot and a weekly drink and she is good to go! Be careful if she is in a high traffic area, she is "pokey". I anchored her in a woven basket from ROSS for a whopping $7.99!

A S P L E N I U M - SHE GOES BY BARBARA

This lovely hanging ornament is beautiful. Her leaves are so curly and when I saw her at IKEA, she was a must have! When i look at this particular plant, I am reminded that there must be a master designer to all of this. So may intricacies, just take a look!

She lives on a weekly drink and a sunny suspension!

P O T A T O V I N E - THAT IS IT...JUST POTATO VINE

This is a cut from my mother's potted vine and It roots very easily. She broke off an arm of her plant and simply placed it in water for me. Soon it will grow roots and be ready to pot. Beware fellas, she's the clingy type (climbing vine).

A L O E V E R A - WE CALL HER "LOTION"

The most heartiest of plants to date for me. I have almost killed it from dehydration and root rot. Somehow she has managed to keep on living through all my green learning mistakes! She is my cat plant with 9 lives. I love how useful she is in the warmer months too, easing all the summer's crispy skin. If you are a plant beginner, then she may be a great option.

C A C T U S - PRICKLES

With only a minimal amount of water and a sunny address, these will add so much personality to your space. Beware of their location, they will fight back.
